Attendees may sign up for workshops when registering for ABCChem. This year’s workshops include topics in green chemistry, artificial intelligence (AI), global connections, and education.

Green Chemistry & Sustainable Innovation Workshop

ACS Global Student Competition: Chemistry and the Smartphone 

Organizers: Saderrick Johnson, Dawn Holt, and Maria da Conceicao Oliveir

Student teams will showcase chemistry‑driven ideas that demonstrate how chemistry enables sustainability, functionality, and innovation in real‑world applications. Through creativity, collaboration, and entrepreneurial insight, these future chemists bring their solutions to the stage. During this high‑energy live event, finalist teams from ACS global student chapters will take the stage to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges and a live audience. Judges will select the most persuasive pitch, while the live audience will vote for their favorite team. 

Global Connections & Education Curriculum Workshops

Bridging Lab and Market: Stimulating Collaborations between Universities and Industry 

Organizers: Floris Rutjes, Luiz Gonzaga de França Lopes, and Leonardo Fraceto

New processes and products often find their origin in scientific inventions stemming from fundamental research at universities. However, the trajectory to develop scientific inventions into societally relevant applications is ill-defined and not seldom proceeds through trial-and-error, making that potentially impactful innovations never find their way to society. This workshop addresses the challenges involved, presents several best practices, and concludes with potential recommendations to policy makers, funders, academia and industry. 

Innovative Strategies for Chemistry Education: Exploring Future Directions 

Organizers: Christina Booker and Mariana Esquivelzeta Rabell

This interactive workshop explores how innovative pedagogical tools, such as generative AI, can enhance student engagement, reflection, and learning. While cognitive offloading to technology puts student learning at risk, strategic use of technology can positively transform learning opportunities. Fostering a sense of belonging and science identity amidst the use of technology will also be investigated. 

This is a multi-modal workshop. Participants will engage in activities to discuss the opportunities and challenges of generative AI in learning and assessments, consider innovative strategies and perspectives for best practices in fostering critical thinking and inclusion, and learn from the experiences of a hybrid panel of chemistry educators from around the world who are experimenting with innovative technological tools. Participants will collaborate to explore future directions in chemistry education. 

Driving Sustainability Through Global Green Chemistry Networks  

Organizers: Lars Ratjen, Paul T. Anastas, Flavia Zacconi, Eliane Pereira Cipolatti, Eduardo García-Verdugo Cepeda, and David A. Laviska

Green Chemistry offers practical solutions to pressing environmental and health challenges by advancing safer, more efficient processes that support a sustainable future. However, lasting impact requires coordinated action across industry, policy, education, and innovation—regionally and globally. 

This world café–style workshop convenes key stakeholders from Atlantic Basin countries, including leaders from government, academia, industry, and finance, to exchange best practices, identify shared challenges and opportunities, and develop strategies to strengthen regional and global Green Chemistry initiatives. Through structured, output-oriented dialogue, the workshop aims to build cross-regional connections, align priorities, and accelerate collaborative action toward inclusive and enduring sustainability outcomes. 

Global Competency and Career Readiness in Chemistry: Preparing Students for an Interconnected Scientific World 

Organizers: Wasiu Lawal, Martin Barbosa, and Michelle Brooks

In today’s interconnected scientific landscape, chemistry professionals must possess not only strong disciplinary knowledge but also global competencies—skills that enable collaboration across cultures, disciplines, and borders. This workshop will explore strategies for embedding global perspectives and career readiness into chemistry education. Participants will learn how to design curricula and co-curricular experiences that foster cultural awareness, interdisciplinary thinking, and adaptability, while also addressing workforce needs in a rapidly evolving global economy.

The session will highlight practical approaches for integrating international collaboration, sustainability, and emerging technologies (such as AI and digital platforms) into chemistry programs. Attendees will leave with actionable ideas for preparing students to thrive in diverse professional environments and contribute to solving global scientific and societal challenges. 

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Workshops

Chemical engineering process technology using IT, OT, and AI tools and applications

Organizers: Joseph Sabol and Yasinda Ariyapperuma

This workshop will be an interactive demonstration of commercial information technology (IT), operational technology (OT), artificial intelligence (AI) tools and applications, enterprise resource planning (ERP) that can be used in chemical processing. Measurable performance gains will be shown via industrial case studies. Attendees will see practical applications of front-line management systems, advanced analytics, machine learning, digital twins, and intelligent operations platforms for overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) optimization, energy efficiency improvement, safety enhancement, and operator training. Predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, soft sensors, and closed-loop optimization will be presented in the context of complex, high-hazard processes. Front-line management will be coupled with ERP applications for finance, human resources, and marketing will be shared. The session will bridge theory and practice, highlighting scalable architectures, cybersecurity considerations, and implementation lessons from operating chemical processing facilities.

If you have already registered for ABCChem 2026 and would like to add a workshop, please complete the following steps:

  1. Visit the ABCChem 2026 registration landing page.
  2. Select “Already registered?” under the Register Now button on the left side of the screen.
  3. Enter your email and confirmation number into the dialog box. If you do not have your confirmation number, please select “forgot your confirmation number?” and enter the email address you registered with to receive your number via email.
  4. Scroll down and click on “Modify Registration”.
  5. Click through the registration pages until you land on the Workshop page. Select the workshop(s) you want to add.
  6. Submit your workshop registration.
